Olathe storms in 2025 and 2026

These are National Weather Service storm reports logged by the Storm Prediction Center. Times are Central.

  • April 27, 2026 (about 5:45 to 6 AM): golf ball-size (1.75-inch) hail 2 miles southwest of Olathe, half-dollar hail on the northwest side, and downed limbs and power outages near Scarborough Street.
  • April 17, 2026 (about 5 PM): hail up to quarter size at Lake Olathe.
  • March 10, 2026 (about 9 to 9:50 PM): quarter-size hail at several spots south and east of Olathe, and ping pong ball-size (1.5-inch) hail 4 miles east of town.
  • May 19, 2025 (about 4:10 to 4:35 PM): the weather station at Olathe Executive Airport measured a 76 mph gust. In town, a large tree fell on a house and caused significant damage, a large tree snapped at the Olathe Community Center, and transformers blew out.

Hail that size can bruise shingles and dent vents and gutters without an obvious leak. If your roof hasn't been looked at since one of these storms, a free inspection will tell you where it stands.

The May 19, 2024 squall line

Olathe was in the middle of it. That night the National Weather Service confirmed:

  • A brief EF-1 tornado on the south side of Gardner (99 mph) at 10:19 PM, then an 80 mph straight-line wind path from Gardner into Olathe two minutes later.
  • A second 70 mph wind path that started in northern Olathe and ran northeast across Johnson County Community College toward Oak Park Mall.

Most of the damage was to trees. Winds that strong can still break the seal on roof shingles and loosen ridge caps, and a big limb can crack decking without an obvious leak. If trees near your house came down or lost limbs that night, have someone check the roof.

What we check on an Olathe roof

  • Shingle seal strips, ridge caps and edges, where wind gets under first
  • Impact marks from limbs, and dented vents or gutters
  • Flashing around chimneys, walls and skylights
  • Attic ventilation and any signs of moisture

You'll get a written scope with Good / Better / Best options, including Malarkey Class IV impact-resistant shingle options on Better and Best.

Replacing the roof on a larger Olathe home

Many newer Olathe homes are large two-stories with steep, many-valley roofs. If you're replacing rather than patching, ask about premium architectural and designer shingle options, and we'll price them side by side in your scope. Financing for qualified homeowners: $0 down, 1 year no payments, no interest, subject to credit approval. See our workmanship guarantee and our Lenexa replacement page for more on first replacements and HOA approvals.

Repair or replace your Olathe roof

If the damage is in one spot, such as flashing, a pipe boot, a few missing shingles or a lifted ridge cap, a repair is often enough. See roof repair in Kansas City for how a repair visit works.

If hail or wind damage is spread across the roof, or the roof is simply worn out, a replacement is usually the better spend. See roof replacement in Kansas City for our Good / Better / Best options with 5, 7 or 10-year craftsmanship warranties.
